Hulet Custom Carpentry

 

Abstract

I plan on starting my own wood working business.  My main focus will be on making custom picture frames, but I will also do other types of custom cabinet making.  I hope to be able to get my name out there to bring in customers, and also improve my skills as a woodworker, and a business owner.

 

Goals

For my project I created my own woodworking brand/business, and I started selling custom woodworking projects.

 

In order to get my woodworking business up and running I wanted to first create a logo.  After doing that I felt that it was easier to market my brand rather than just my own woodworking skills.  I already had a few people ask me to make them some custom frames, so it wasn’t hard to hit the ground running with some products to generate revenue.  I spent at least 4 hours a week working on orders, and it was actually the perfect amount to be able to fit it in with school and work.  After the first few projects, I had those customers recommend me to other people.  This is how I have been able to keep a steady flow of jobs.  I was worried about marketing, but I haven’t had to do much of that on my own yet.

 

Outcomes

I was able to sell products, and it helped me improve my woodworking skills.

Getting my business up and running helped me better understand the process of starting and running a business.

 

One of the first things I made was a set of three pictures with very small frames that you hang next to each other, and it was actually quite difficult for me to do.  I have made plenty of picture frames before, but ones this small are hard to attach because of the small surface area for the glue to bond.  I came up with a jig to cut joints into each piece that I could insert a piece of wood into and it would hold a lot better.  It was things like this that I was able to do in order to improve my woodworking abilities. 

 

Original Deliverable

When I have completed this project, I will be able to turn in my company’s logo, pictures of me building my projects, and pictures of the final products.
